Summary

Lumiform and Testo both offer solutions for food industry inspections. Lumiform is a dedicated inspection platform that includes workflow automation, AI, and corrective action management. Testo combines measurement devices with software for monitoring and analyzing the data. If you’re managing food safety, quality checks, and compliance, Lumiform is the more comprehensive choice, supporting the full workflow, including scheduling and resolution tracking.

Food industry inspections range from HACCP checks to hygiene audits and temperature logging, so it’s essential to be clear about which activities you need to cover and choose a tool that matches those specific requirements.

Lumiform is one popular tool for the food industry and a mobile-first inspection management software for frontline operations, while Testo offers sensor-based monitoring and measurement systems. Which tool suits you depends on your exact business needs, such as whether you’re looking for fast deployment or a hardware-based setup with more involved implementation.

Below, we’ve reviewed Lumiform and Testo in the context of food industry inspections so you can get a clear idea of how each one can fit into your regular work. This guide breaks down the key differences in features, pricing, and usability, both for managers and frontline workers.

What is Lumiform?

Lumiform is an AI-powered inspection and audit platform used by over 1,000 companies globally, including restaurant chains, grocery retailers, and food production plants. The platform covers the end-to-end inspection lifecycle, from data collection through analysis and proactive measure initiation. You build inspection forms and assign them to staff, collect data on mobile devices, trigger corrective actions automatically when items fail, and generate audit-ready reports.

For on-the-go use, Lumiform works native on any iOS or Android device even without an internet connection, and managers can view the data through real-time dashboards. Unlike basic data collection systems, Lumiform functions as an operational intelligence platform that continuously ensures quality, hygiene, and compliance.

“We originally wanted to use Lumiform exclusively for our HACCP system, but after realizing how versatile and flexible the software is, we decided to use Lumiform for auditing purposes and action tracking as well.”

Manuel Suppiger, kaisin.

Some of its highlights include:

  • Mobile checklists that work fully offline, even in cold storage or production areas
  • Intuitive interface for all employees, from frontline staff to quality managers
  • AI-supported error and anomaly detection for identifying patterns quickly
  • Workflow automation, including instant task assignments based on inspection results

What is Testo?

Testo specializes in measurement and monitoring solutions used across diverse industries, such as food safety, HVAC, pharmaceuticals, and logistics. It offers hardware devices worldwide, including sensors, probes, and data loggers that measure physical parameters like temperature, humidity, pressure, and air condition. These devices connect to software that stores and analyzes the captured data.

Rather than offering a single unified platform, Testo delivers specialized solutions for different use cases, with each focused on specific measurement tasks. In the food industry, its Testo Saveris Food and Restaurant solutions support digital food safety management by continuously monitoring critical control points and automatically documenting data for compliance with standards. Its strength lies in precise data recording rather than managing the full inspection workflow.

Some of its key features are:

  • Sensor-based monitoring for continuously tracking temperature, humidity, and oil quality
  • Proprietary tablets and control units to guide staff through measurement tasks
  • Instant alerts when thresholds are exceeded, enabling quick response to deviations
  • Automated documentation of measurements for compliance and audit purposes

Key feature comparison for food industry inspections

Below, we look at how both Lumiform and Testo Saveris Food and Restaurant handle the core requirements of inspections in the food industry. Read on for an in-depth breakdown, from checklist capabilities to reporting:

1. Overall inspection capabilities

For food businesses, inspections rarely happen in isolation. On a typical day, your team might handle a hygiene check in the morning, a goods delivery at noon, and a supplier audit later, often across various locations. Lumiform and Testo both offer inspection tools for the food industry, but they’re designed with different purposes in mind.

Lumiform covers the entire inspection workflow for frontline operations, including:

  • Building forms and capturing data
  • Triggering corrective actions to handle issues
  • Managing approvals
  • Analyzing results and producing reports

This creates a unified system where processes don’t stop at documentation but continue through resolution and continuous improvement. Lumiform also adapts to a wide range of use cases, such as HACCP checks, temperature logs, equipment maintenance, and staff training verification, without the need for additional tools or installations.

“When we learned that Lumiform runs on the MDE device and doesn’t require any additional hardware, the decision was practically made… [With Lumiform,] the organic certification was the most relaxed inspection I’ve ever had.”

Jannik Hörnke, EDEKA Sven Krause

By comparison, Testo offers separate hardware and software solutions by use case. For example, it has its own food safety management system via Saveris Food, which requires proprietary tablets. We also found that HVAC workflows rely on a separate mobile app, while logistics is handled through yet another solution, often with different measuring devices too. This results in a longer setup with additional costs if you want to manage multiple processes.

In the inspection process, Testo’s main focus is on monitoring and documenting critical control points. It places less emphasis on other steps such as automated task management, approvals, or training. Some organizations actually end up combining it with a separate inspection platform like Lumiform, rather than using it on its own.

This difference is also reflected in each platform’s digital forms and checklist capabilities, which form the foundation of any inspection process. Lumiform’s checklists are fully customizable and dynamic, with a library of 10,000+ templates and AI assistance for fast setup across different scenarios. Checklists adapt in real time, showing different questions based on previous answers, triggering actions immediately if something is off, and adjusting automatically depending on the location or store type. This saves a lot of time with setup and makes inspections with Lumiform a guided process.

Testo also includes digital checklists, mainly for food safety documentation, but these tend to be more rigid. Advanced features such as AI support or dynamic logic are limited, as they are not a core focus of the platform.

Overall, Lumiform is the more versatile option for most teams wanting to manage inspections end to end, across diverse use cases. If your priority is continuous, sensor-based monitoring, Testo remains a reliable choice. But if your goal is to manage multiple inspection and operational processes in one place, without adding complexity or administrative overhead, Lumiform provides broader coverage and adapts more easily to how work actually happens day to day.

2. Pricing

Pricing is another major factor when you’re choosing between the two platforms, especially if you want a long-term solution as you scale.

Testo works on a hardware-driven pricing model. Instead of one system cost, you’re building a setup made up of multiple components. As an example:

For full monitoring, each critical control point, like fridges, freezers, or storage areas, can also have its own data logger or sensor, and devices can range from €200 on the lower end to €800+. This adds up quickly. If you have even a single restaurant with multiple cooling units, you may already require several devices, and as you scale across locations, the total investment grows with every additional monitoring point. Based on our analysis, costs can also become fragmented if different use cases are covered by separate Testo solutions.

In comparison, Lumiform follows a straightforward per-user SaaS pricing, with volume discounts. Pricing starts at around €100 per month for 5 users (roughly €20 per user), with the rate per user going down as your team grows.

Its Professional plan already includes core inspection features such as checklist creation, workflow automation, and analytics, making it suitable for most inspections out of the box, while the Enterprise plan offers extended capabilities. You can also get certain Enterprise features as add-ons, such as training and approvals, so you can scale functionality as needed.

Importantly, Lumiform runs on devices you already use, including smartphones, tablets, or even existing MDE scanners, so you won’t necessarily need additional hardware investment.

Testo’s pricing reflects an investment in physical monitoring infrastructure, which is essential for continuous sensor tracking. Lumiform, on the other hand, has a more predictable cost structure, with key inspection features already and discounts as you scale. This makes it more cost-effective to start and maintain, especially if you want to conduct inspections quickly without extra hardware purchases.

3. AI features

As your inspection needs grow, you may be looking for ways to reduce manual effort, such as when writing reports or setting up forms. AI features help significantly with this, automating many tedious parts of the process. Here, we see a clear difference between the two tools: Lumiform integrates AI across the inspection workflow, while Testo does not offer any AI capabilities (as of April 2026).

With Lumiform, AI is built into the platform to support your work at multiple stages. Some examples include:

  • Instant form generation based on text prompts
  • Automatic form translations into 60+ languages for international teams
  • Photo validation, where staff take a photo and AI checks for anomalies
  • AI chat for analytics to surface insights from your data
  • OCR text capture and document scanning from labels or other documents

Because of these, tasks that would normally take hours can be reduced quickly for anyone using the platform, speeding up checks while making inspections smoother overall. This also leads to faster decision-making and problem-solving. As you manage more inspections, these efficiency gains accumulate and free up time for higher-value tasks.

Testo does not currently integrate AI into its food inspection workflows. Its approach is primarily based on sensor data collection and rule-based logic, with predefined thresholds and alerts when limits are exceeded.

This means with Testo, there’s less assistance for interpreting the data and deciding on next steps, with more effort involved in handling forms and follow-up actions. As a result, we think that decision-making tends to be more reactive, and it can take longer. Lumiform comes with diverse AI features that continue to expand, reducing the workload for teams while making it easier to maintain high quality.

4. Corrective action management

During inspections, identifying an issue is only the first step because follow-up is equally if not even more important, so problems don’t happen again. But in a busy environment, follow-ups often risk getting forgotten or delayed, especially if there’s no strong system for them.

Testo incorporates corrective action management, but it’s mainly driven by alerts. When a temperature deviation occurs, the system can generate alerts, which can be real-time alarms or an email or app notifications, depending on your setup. However, there’s less structure for what happens after the alarm. While you can assign tasks within the platform, you still need to largely coordinate them manually which can increase delays and slow down resolution.

In Lumiform, we see these gaps reduced through built-in workflow automation. In case an inspection item fails, the system automatically sends a task to the responsible staff member with a due date, with tracking all the way through to resolution. Follow-up or incident forms can be sent as well, without manual intervention. For example, when EDEKA Nord rolled out Lumiform across 40+ stores, one feature they found especially useful was setting alerts on temperature lists, with automatic corrective actions when temperatures go too high.

“When a temperature that’s too high is entered, the system alerts employees to the problem and automatically creates follow-up actions. The inspectors are really impressed by Lumiform and the data collected.”

Andre Heisig, EDEKA Nord

On top of this, AI photo validation supports problem-solving too: the app’s AI can analyze photos and recognize whether something looks off or does not meet standards, reducing the risk of errors being missed. Combined with features like approval workflows with feedback and escalations, this creates a thorough process that minimizes issues being missed, with every action documented and accountable.

In summary:

  • Lumiform offers more control for corrective action management, with targeted features for faster and more automated issue resolution. You can track issues from start to finish without leaving the app.
  • Testo is strong in detecting deviations with the help of sensors, but beyond that, it offers less support for corrective actions, which can make follow-up harder to maintain over time compared to Lumiform.

5. Mobile app and field usability

In day-to-day food inspections, your team needs to complete checks quickly, often while handling other tasks. If a system slows people down or feels complicated, it often leads to skipped steps and inconsistent data, as well as longer onboarding. This is why inspection tools typically come with a mobile app for on-the-go use, such as when conducting delivery checks or a hygiene inspection.

The Lumiform mobile app is specifically designed for frontline work, and it runs on diverse devices, including phones and tablets. Since you can often use existing devices, deployment is straightforward, especially if inspections have to be in multiple locations.

The app also allows you to complete inspections offline, with photo capture and e-signatures included, and data syncs automatically once there’s a connection again. Because of this, inspections can continue uninterrupted regardless of location. Beyond checklists, the app displays tasks and corrective actions too, and it’s possible to include your own training courses as reference.

New employees can typically follow checklists without much training, as the workflow guides them step by step. In addition, support for 60+ languages helps ensure that every team member clearly understands what to do, reducing errors during inspections. For example, EDEKA Nord deployed Lumiform across 40+ stores and found staff could begin using the system immediately without extensive training.

On the other hand, Testo’s setup is more hardware-centric. It offers a mobile app for monitoring as well as a dedicated control unit or tablet system that’s tightly integrated with its sensors via Bluetooth. This then displays alerts and ensures measurement data is captured consistently. In our review, we also saw that offline mode primarily involves sensor readings being transmitted to the tablet or phone without internet, but offers limited offline support for completing and saving inspection checklists.

This leads to more setup time. Staff may work with proprietary tablets, which require initial setup and training, and the overall system can feel more technical, especially for employees who don’t regularly use such tools.

With Lumiform, inspections can be done anywhere, even without internet access. Combined with a straightforward interface designed for field operations, it’s easier to integrate into your routines. For Testo, the setup is more fixed, and it may also involve proprietary tablets, with a steeper learning curve.

For a flexible mobile solution that’s fast to deploy across multiple locations, Lumiform is the more suitable option, with greater accessibility and offline capacity for inspections.

“Thanks to Lumiform, we save a massive amount of time and can achieve a higher level of quality… With Lumiform, I have absolute control in real time. We monitor critical control points (CCPs), such as maintaining the cold chain for salmon.”

Manuel Suppiger, kaisin.

6. Reporting and analytics

Once inspection data is collected, it needs to be turned into clear, audit-ready documentation that proves compliance. Beyond that, it’s also critical to analyze the data to understand what’s happening overall and implement improvements.

Testo provides solid reporting for sensor and measurement data. Dashboards and logs allow you to track parameters like temperature over time, review threshold breaches, and export reports for compliance. This allows you to monitor critical control points and prove that standards are being met.

The analysis is largely centered on these measurements, with fewer options for deeper filtering, custom dashboards, or combining different types of data. Compared to other platforms, there’s less support for turning this information into broader operational insights, which means that extra follow-up is often necessary. This is less of a limitation if you integrate external analytics tools, but it does make the overall setup more complex.

Because all inspection data, like checklists, actions, photos, and results, is captured in one system, Lumiform offers a more holistic approach to reporting and analytics. Reports show timestamps as well as exact actions you took to resolve a problem, giving a thorough paper trail needed for audits. Both reports and analytics dashboards are highly customizable to match your business requirements, and they can be scheduled to be sent automatically to stakeholders.

Lumiform G2 review

At the same time, you can drill down into select data points, whether that’s a specific location or a recurring issue. You can also chat with AI about trends and recommendations based on your data, leading to faster, more targeted insights about how to concretely improve your operations.

In terms of reporting capabilities:

  • Lumiform goes beyond documentation by helping you actively understand and spot opportunities for improvement, with reports that also cover key inspection elements, including corrective actions and evidence.
  • Testo focuses less on deeper analysis and cross-location insights, but it’s strong in monitoring and compliance reporting at specific control points, with a very specific scope for data.

7. Staff training

Beyond the tools and systems, we believe that inspections also depend on how well your team understands procedures, such as hygiene standards, cleaning protocols, and food handling requirements. New staff need to pick these up quickly, and even experienced employees benefit from regular refreshers to keep standards consistent.

While a training component isn’t essential for every inspection platform, we see it adding clear value in practice. Lumiform includes a built-in training module where you can create courses with video content and quizzes, set pass thresholds, assign them to employees, and track their completion. Training can also be accessed directly through the mobile app, so staff can review procedures and guidelines on site. Over time, this reduces repeated mistakes and improves overall compliance.

Since Testo mostly handles data collection and monitoring, there is no built-in training module. You would rely on a separate LMS or external system for staff training, which adds another layer to manage. The training component highlights Lumiform’s end-to-end approach to inspections, as it helps you not only to manage inspections, but also to ensure your team is consistently prepared to carry them out correctly. This is especially important in the food industry, where even small mistakes in hygiene or handling procedures can lead to compliance violations and safety risks.

When to choose Lumiform vs Testo

Given how either platforms perform in real-life inspections, Lumiform is the stronger choice if you’re looking to:

  • Manage HACCP compliance across multiple locations: Centralized visibility into inspection completion, issues, and trends across all sites from a single dashboard
  • Cover the full inspection lifecycle: End-to-end workflows covering detection, action assignment, tracking, resolution, and verification in one platform
  • Replace paper checklists with digital forms: No-code form builder and offline mobile app let teams digitize existing processes without IT involvement
  • Track corrective actions to resolution: Automated task routing with deadlines and verification tracking ensures temperature excursions and cleaning failures are documented and resolved
  • Train food handlers on safety procedures: Built-in training module links learning to inspection workflows without requiring a separate system

Testo is a solid tool if you’re primarily aiming for these:

  • Continuous automated temperature monitoring: 24/7 logging with alerts when refrigeration units exceed safe thresholds
  • High-precision measurement requirements: Calibrated instruments meet strict accuracy standards for laboratory and production environments
  • Measurement-only requirements: If the requirement is temperature data capture without digital checklists or corrective action management, Testo’s focused solution may suffice
  • Sensor integration priority: Operations that value resolving connectivity issues with reliable sensor-to-cloud data transmission

Our approach to evaluating this comparison

This comparison was prepared by the Lumiform team based on a review of multiple sources, including:

  • Product information for both Testo and Lumiform
  • User reviews on G2, Capterra, and other websites
  • Customer case studies published by both platforms
  • Established food industry inspection practices, including for HACCP compliance

Pricing and features were verified as of April 2026. While the two solutions have major differences, it is worth noting that some organizations use them in combination, for example by pairing sensor-based monitoring with broader food safety and inspection workflows.
