Use this waste audit checklist to ensure an effective waste audit process for the organization. Use this to: determine the readiness of the waste audit team, prepare equipment needed during the audit, guide the team during sorting of waste, and come up with action plans.
Evaluate waste hauler’s accepted recyclable types against current collections
Determine methods and waste categories
Outline goals and state some predictions
Made a list of multiple, well-ventilated areas where waste sorting can be conducted
List pros and cons of sorting at each area (ventilation, convenience, flooring, clean-up)
Consider recruiting help if needed for the physical tasks
Obtain buy-in/permission for waste sorting at the most ideal location
PPE and Sorting Equipment
Confirm if the following are ready:
Puncture-resistant nitrile gloves
Full Tyvek coverall
Eye protection
Face masks
Long tongs
Clean-up supplies and equipment
First-Aid Kit
Large plastic sheet to be spread on a flat surface or folding Tables w/ Plastic Covering (Consider creating a "lip" or frame on the perimeter of the table under the plastic covering to keep liquids from running off.)
Waste Sorting
Confirm if the following are done:
Coordinate time and place with the sorting team
Coordinate waste "pull" and note the time and place of sample
Execute audit by separating waste by waste stream. (If the trash is already in a bag or bin, consider not dumping that bag or bin. Lift the items out of that container to leave possible wet slop in the bottom)
Tally up or weigh various waste streams and record
Clean up and dispose/recycle properly
Findings and Follow-up
Tally the data collected
Compare findings against initial predictions
Objectively evaluate the sample size and date/time of "pull" and sort
Compare findings to previous waste-audits if available
Compare findings against purchasing records
Discuss findings with custodial staff and other stakeholders
