The standard regulates the smoke detector maintenance: DIN 14676 This European product standard has been mandatory for smoke detectors since 2008. In addition to the annual maintenance of smoke detectors, it also regulates the met performance criteria. To obtain the corresponding certification, all smoke detectors must undergo a wide variety of test procedures. You can carry out part of the verification and checks internally in your organization. The so-called type testing, which provides proof of conformity, is performed by an independent product certification body. Before you check your smoke detector, one more important thing first: every smoke detector is different, make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions. The manufacturer's instructions can be found in the operating instructions for the smoke detector. The following list should serve as a guide to what your own individualised checklist for smoke detector maintenance can look like.
The first step in smoke detector maintenance is to press the test button. If the signal from the smoke detector stops beeping after a few seconds, there is a malfunction. In this case, the batteries must be replaced.
Check that the smoke detector is free of e.g. dust, insects or dirt. If your smoke detector is very dirty, replace it. Also, do a practical test when you check the smoke detector. Do the batteries need to be replaced? Generally speaking, your smoke detector should be replaced at least every 10 years.
The smoke detector must be free of obstacles within a radius of at least 50cm. Make sure that there are no walls, room dividers or other objects in the way.
Make sure that the smoke detectors are still installed in all necessary places. Over time, the use of room changes. Therefore, it is always necessary to check whether the spatial conditions have changed.
