Document problem-solving by presenting scenarios requiring troubleshooting, such as quality control failures, instrument malfunctions, or unusual patient results. Record the employee’s approach to identifying and resolving the issue. Include specific examples of problems encountered during routine work and how the employee successfully addressed them.

The technical consultant, technical supervisor, or laboratory director should perform the assessments. The assessor must be qualified to evaluate the testing being performed and understand the regulatory requirements. For specialized testing areas, subject matter experts may assist with the assessment process under the supervision of authorized personnel.

Document the specific deficiency, create an individualized improvement plan with targeted training, and schedule a reassessment. The employee shouldn’t perform independent patient testing in the deficient area until competency is demonstrated. Keep records of both the initial assessment and subsequent remediation efforts.
