Heavy equipment pre-trip checklist

First, identify which fluid is low and refill it to the manufacturer’s recommended level using the correct fluid type. Document the issue in your inspection report, and if you notice frequent low levels in the same system, request a maintenance check to identify possible leaks or consumption problems. Never operate equipment with critically low fluid levels.

Conduct your pre-trip inspection at the beginning of each shift before operating the equipment. Additional inspections are necessary after lunch breaks if the equipment has been idle, following any unusual operation conditions like extreme weather, and whenever a different operator takes control of the machine. Consistent timing helps establish a reliable safety routine.

Skipping checklist items can lead to equipment failure during operation, costly repairs that could have been prevented, OSHA violations resulting in significant fines, workplace injuries or fatalities, project delays, and increased insurance premiums. Even seemingly minor items like checking coolant levels can prevent catastrophic engine damage if addressed before operation.
