General container inspection checklist

The most common issues found during container inspections include water damage from roof leaks, floor damage from improper forklift operation, door seal deterioration affecting waterproofing, structural damage to corner posts affecting stacking capability, and rust penetration through container walls. Other frequent problems include odor contamination from previous cargo, pest infestations, and improper repairs that don’t meet international standards for container integrity.

To properly document container damage, take clear, well-lit photographs from multiple angles showing the extent and location of damage. Note the container number in each photo for reference. Measure and record the dimensions of any holes, dents, or structural deformations. Use the checklist to categorize damage by container section and severity. Include observations about whether the damage affects container functionality or cargo safety, and timestamp all documentation for liability purposes.

To inspect a container for water tightness, first examine the roof for dents, holes, or repairs that might allow water penetration. Check corner posts and vertical seams for signs of previous leakage. Inside, look for water stains, rust patterns, or mildew on walls and ceiling. Inspect door gaskets for proper compression when closed. During daylight, close the doors from inside to identify light penetration through gaps. For critical cargo, consider using smoke tests to reveal minor leaks not visible during visual inspection.
