Commercial truck pre-trip inspection checklist

You must document any defects found during inspection in a Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR). If no defects are found, recent FMCSA changes mean you’re no longer required to complete a report. However, many companies still require documentation of all inspections. Keep records of repairs made following inspections. Motor carriers must retain DVIRs, repair certifications, and driver review certifications for three months.

By systematically inspecting the same components that officers check during roadside inspections, you’ll identify and address problems proactively. While FMCSA only mandates pre-trip and post-trip inspections, these supplemental checks help identify developing issues before they become safety hazards or cause breakdowns in inconvenient locations.
