You should conduct inspections daily—both pre-trip and post-trip. Morning inspections help identify issues before operation, while end-of-day checks catch problems that developed during use. For hydraulic systems specifically, check fluid levels and inspect for leaks at the start of each shift, as these components are critical to safe dumping operations and failures can occur rapidly.

Watch for the truck leaning to one side when loaded, difficulty steering, or unusual tire wear patterns. When loading, ensure material is centered in the bed rather than concentrated at the front, back, or sides. During dumping operations, uneven discharge or the truck feeling unstable are warning signs. Always verify your load weight against the truck’s rated capacity before departing the loading area.

First, determine the severity—a seeping fitting might need monitoring while active drips require immediate attention. Document the leak’s location precisely on your checklist. For minor leaks, you might tighten fittings, but never use your hands to check for leaks as high-pressure fluid can penetrate skin. For significant leaks or if the source isn’t obvious, tag the truck out of service and consult a qualified mechanic.

Always park on level ground with wheels chocked. Ensure the engine is off when checking under the hood. Use the safety prop when inspecting under a raised bed—never rely solely on hydraulics. Wear appropriate PPE including gloves and eye protection when checking fluids. Be mindful of pinch points around the tailgate and bed hinge areas. Allow hot components to cool before inspection to prevent burns.
