Fire safety and evacuation plan template

Your fire hazard assessment should identify potential ignition sources (electrical equipment, heating systems, cooking appliances), combustible materials, and high-risk areas. Document existing fire prevention measures, inspection schedules, and any special hazards unique to your facility. This creates a foundation for targeted prevention strategies.

Start by obtaining floor plans for each level and mark primary and secondary evacuation routes using different colors. Identify stairwells, emergency exits, and fire doors. Consider traffic flow to prevent bottlenecks, and ensure routes accommodate employees with mobility limitations. Test these routes during drills to verify their practicality.

Review and update your plan annually at minimum, and immediately after any facility modifications, occupancy changes, or following an actual emergency or drill that revealed deficiencies. Regular updates ensure the plan remains relevant to current conditions and incorporates lessons learned from drills or incidents.

Designate floor wardens to oversee evacuation of specific areas, evacuation assistants for mobility-impaired individuals, and assembly point coordinators to account for personnel. Also assign individuals responsible for shutting down critical equipment, contacting emergency services, and providing first aid if needed.
