Rough framing inspection checklist

Before conducting your inspection, review the approved building plans and structural drawings to understand design requirements. Ensure the area is well-lit and accessible, and coordinate with contractors so framing is complete but walls remain open. This preparation lays the foundation for an efficient and thorough inspection process.

Conduct the inspection after all framing components are installed but before mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins begin. The ideal timing is when the structure is “dried in” (roof installed) but before insulation and drywall. This timing allows you to see all structural elements clearly while giving you opportunity to address issues before they’re covered by other building systems.

Take photos of both compliant elements and deficiencies, referencing their location on your checklist. Note specific measurements where applicable and describe issues clearly. For deficiencies, specify the required remedy and code reference. This documentation creates a clear record for contractors to address issues and provides evidence of your thorough inspection process.

Watch for notched or drilled structural members exceeding code limitations, inadequate bearing for beams and joists, missing or improperly installed lateral bracing, and insufficient blocking. Other common issues include improper spacing of studs or joists, missing or inadequate shear panels, and foundation anchor bolts with insufficient embedment or improper spacing and edge distance.
