Wood framing inspection checklist

Check the grade stamps on lumber pieces, which indicate species, moisture content, and grade classification. Compare these markings against your project specifications or local building code requirements. For engineered wood products, review manufacturer documentation to verify they meet design specifications. When in doubt, consult your structural drawings or engineering specifications.

Watch for large knots (especially on the tension side of beams), splits longer than the member’s width, excessive warping or twisting, and decay or fungal growth. Check for deep saw kerfs, notches in inappropriate locations, and holes that weren’t pre-approved. Also inspect for insect damage, which appears as small holes or tunneling. These defects can significantly reduce structural capacity.

Complete the checklist after all framing elements are installed but before they’re concealed by insulation, utilities, or wall coverings. This timing allows you to inspect all connections and structural elements while they’re still accessible for corrections. For larger projects, consider progressive inspections as each floor or section is completed to catch issues early in the construction process.

Document specific issues by taking photos and noting exact locations on the checklist. Be precise about what needs correction, referencing applicable code sections or project specifications. Assign each issue a priority level based on structural importance. Share the completed checklist with contractors promptly, establishing clear deadlines for remediation and scheduling follow-up inspections.
