Weld visual inspection checklist template

This checklist serves as a standardized tool to ensure consistency across all weld inspections. By documenting each critical visual attribute—surface cracks, porosity, reinforcement uniformity, toe blending, and size compliance—you create a verifiable quality record. This allows you to identify trends in defects, provide targeted feedback to welders, and demonstrate compliance with quality standards when required by clients or regulatory bodies.

Document the specific deficiency with measurements and photographs if possible. Mark the defective area clearly on the workpiece using a suitable marker. Consult the applicable code or standard to determine if the defect exceeds allowable limits. If it does, issue a non-conformance report detailing the required repairs. After repairs are completed, conduct a full re-inspection using a new checklist to verify all criteria are now met.

Maintain records of the welder’s qualification certificates, applicable welding procedure specifications (WPS), and material test certificates alongside this checklist. Include photographs of any notable conditions found during inspection, particularly for rejected welds. Also document any subsequent repairs performed and their re-inspection results. Having comprehensive documentation provides traceability and evidence of quality control for audits or future reference.
