Ladder inspection checklist – HSE

Focus on stiles (side rails) for bending or denting, feet for wear or missing components, rungs for cracks or looseness, and all locking mechanisms for proper function. HSE guidance emphasizes checking for twisted stiles, damaged feet, loose rungs, and missing tie rods as these are common failure points that lead to accidents.

Keep records showing inspection date, ladder identification, inspection findings, actions taken for any defects, name of inspector, and next inspection date. This documentation demonstrates compliance with Work at Height Regulations and creates an audit trail that can protect your organization during safety investigations or regulatory reviews.

HSE requires a “competent person” with sufficient training, knowledge, and experience to perform detailed visual inspections and identify potential hazards. Ladder users can carry out pre-use checks, but someone with proper training in ladder safety standards and inspection protocols should conduct formal inspections.

Minor repairs, such as tightening loose screws or replacing feet, are often acceptable. Replace the ladder when you find structural damage, such as cracked side rails or bent rungs. Remove ladders with significant wear or corrosion from service to prevent accidents.
