Truck mounted crane inspection checklist

When inspecting the boom, check for structural damage like dents, cracks, or deformation. Examine all welds for integrity and look for signs of corrosion. Ensure the boom sections extend and retract smoothly without binding. Any hydraulic cylinders should be free from leaks, and all pins and retaining devices should be properly secured and in good condition.

Document each deficiency with specific details about the component, nature of the problem, and severity. Take photos when possible. Note whether the issue requires immediate attention or can be monitored. Include the date, inspector’s name, and crane identifier. Follow your company’s procedure for reporting deficiencies and ensure a qualified person evaluates whether the deficiency constitutes a safety hazard before further operation.

Immediately tag the crane as “out of service” if the issue affects safe operation. Report the problem to your supervisor and document it thoroughly on the inspection form. Never operate a crane with safety-critical deficiencies. For less critical issues, determine if limited operation is possible with restrictions. Ensure all repairs are performed by qualified technicians and that the crane is re-inspected before returning to full service.
