Focus on four critical areas: hardware (D-rings, buckles) for deformation or corrosion; webbing for cuts, burns, or fraying; stitching for loose or broken threads; and labels for legibility. Bend webbing into a U-shape to better reveal damage, and manually feel for stiffness, which can indicate chemical exposure or UV degradation.

Your inspection records should include the harness manufacturer, model, serial number, manufacture date, inspection date, inspector name, pass/fail status for each component, detailed notes about any concerns, and photographs of damage if applicable. This documentation creates an audit trail that demonstrates regulatory compliance.

Examine the webbing by bending it into an inverted U-shape, which reveals damage that might not be visible when flat. Run your fingers along the edges to feel for inconsistencies. Look for cuts, burns, chemical damage, excessive wear, and UV degradation, paying special attention to areas that contact hardware.
